Take Your Herbs!
This may sound silly, but too often bottles of tablets end up sitting on a shelf. They end up forgotten, and pushed to the back of the cupboard shelf. (Say what? You’ve done that too? We all have).
From my years of training and experience as an Ayurveda practitioner I learned to respect and remember that herbs are a supplement to your diet, and meant to be taken consistently over time.
To receive the maximum benefits it is important to take them daily.

So, it’s important to integrate them into your daily routine and to take them consistently.

Setting Intentions With Your Herbs
Ayurveda has a deep reverence and respect for all living things and especially plants. Each and every herb carries a life force energy (prana), intelligence, and unique energetic properties and qualities.
In Ayurveda formulations, each plant is carefully selected and prepared with the intention of bringing health and well-being into the recipient.

When To Take Your Herbs
In Ayurveda, when you should take your herbs is determined by what formula you are taking and what your intention is. If you’re taking herbal tablets to improve your digestion take them after meals. To enkindle your appetite, take them before your meals.
If your taking herbal tablets for detoxification it’s usually most effective to take on an empty stomach either before bed or upon awakening. For general support and rejuvenation, almost any time of day is okay.
If you’re taking herbal tablets to promote sound sleep, take them at bedtime, or an hour before.

Recognizing that each person has a unique constitution and individuality. If you have a sensitive stomach you may find it works better to take your herbs with food, or after meals.
Generally, it’s far more important to pick a time that is convenient for you than to be overly concerned about precisely when to take them. And if by chance you happen to miss your most optimal time, in most cases it is still useful to take them when you can.

It’s not uncommon to experience a cleansing action. To maintain comfort I usually suggest to my clients during an ayurvedic consultation that they start with the lowest recommended dose and then slowly increase as needed and or tolerated.
A perfect example, many clients find that one tablet of triphala daily supports regular healthy bowel movements, while others find that 4 tablets daily is more effective. Everybody is little bit different.
