Liver Flush Smoothie – Ayurveda Recipe
What I love about Ayurveda is it’s sensibility towards gentle, seasonal detoxification to support our health and well-being. Ayurveda offers the Cadillac of detoxification with it’s panchakarma guidelines.
Panchakarma means five channels and refers to the process of addressing the five major organ systems used to cleanse the body of accumulated toxins, called Ama.
I spent 18 months training in a certification program to specialize in Panchakarma before opening an ayurvedic wellness center.
Unlike most programs that suggest aggressively blasting the colon and liver, Ayurveda has a gentler approach for loosening accumulated build up deep within the tissues. No harsh extremes here.
After a hot summer, the recommendations for cleansing in Fall are to cool the body by getting the heat out of the liver.
Energetically, the liver is the organ of the body that stores anger.
I don’t know about you, but, with all the social and political unrest and banter that continues on in the media, I’m ready to support my liver to release unhealthy emotions.
Below is my go to recipe for a tasty, yet gentle, liver flush smoothie I recommend for this time of year. It has slight variations based on individual body type and constitutions, called a dosha in Ayurveda.
Don’t know your dosha? No problem. You can take the quiz here.
Or you can just follow the recipe for Pitta below.
Mix the herbs together and then add them with other ingredients to your blender.
Mix in blender with:
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 small fresh raw beet,
¼ cup fresh or frozen cranberries.
1 cup water, or coconut water
Blend all ingredients in a high speed blender and enjoy. Don’t eat any fat for 2 hours after drinking the smoothie.
NOTE: Sometimes it’s hard to find certain herbs in powder form, in smaller quantities. You can mix and grind them into powder form with a spice/coffee grinder or in a high speed blender like a Vitamix. You should use organic herbs for this recipe! I’ve provided links for companies I use and recommend.
