I’m so glad you’re here.
I talk a lot on the podcast about spiritual and mental and emotional healing and that aspect of balancing our bodies and our lives. From an energetic approach and so I’m excited today to start sharing with you principles from Ayurvedic medicine and I’m going to tell you how I got into it and why I think that it is the Cadillac healing and it really truly is because it makes your body mind energetic makeup. It addresses your uniqueness and some people get kind of caught up in getting it, right? Like how do I figure this out and get it right and putting themselves in the box, right? Ayurvedic medicine. So Ayurveda iron and beta means science of life. It’s the science of your life of the life forces moving through our bodies moving through everything in nature. I’m going to talk a little bit about that today so that you can get an idea of whether or not this is something if you have been struggling to remove symptoms, you know that I don’t particularly like the idea of putting band aids on symptoms and chasing after the symptoms I advocate for getting to the core cause. Once you do that, yeah, so you do have to manage your physical body, Ayurveda was a game changer for me when I first learned about it. I was living at kripalu center in Linux, Massachusetts. I was doing a training there three months.
Training for to become a certified holistic health practitioner. This is way back in the 1980s. I was new to the world of fairly new to the world of yoga and meditation. I certainly hadn’t been practicing it for any amount of time. But I knew after reversing ten years of daily chronic pain and beginning to open up to this whole new world of holistic healing and medicine that I wanted to become certified. I had gone there for a weekend, retreat, a yoga retreat, and they had a healing arts center there where you could get different body treatments and energy healing and massage and things like that. And you would think that being an environment every day where, I mean, we were eating at the time they were very vegetarian.
There was no animal proteins in the meals there. Wonderful meals. You would think that eating three, really healthy, vibrant, whole foods, vegetarian meals, eating three of those meals a day would be very healthy and doing yoga and meditation. It was healthy, but what happened is I stopped having my menstrual cycle and it didn’t make sense to me because I was there and we had a fairly rigid routine of being in this coursework and we had to adhere to the practices we were up very early in the morning. We had good meals.
It’s a beautiful area. We would spend a lot of time outdoors, we were doing a lot of inner work, so it did make sense to me. Why would I have this imbalance where I wasn’t having my menstrual cycle? So when I left there, the synchronicity of it all is I came back to my hometown and they were having a three hour workshop for women’s health at the local Himalayan institute here.
And I said, well, that’s divine intervention. I’m going to check this out. And so I went to the workshop and I met the woman who was doing the workshop with Kerry demers, who was the, she’s a board certified MD and intern issue is the medical director at their headquarters in Pennsylvania. And she was coming to western New York every month to see patients. And so I had a quick chat with her after the workshop. She said, well, I have some appointments open. Why don’t you come tomorrow for a consultation? So I did.
I found out about what is called my dosha that is the mind body type in Ayurvedic medicine. She gave me a homeopathic medication herb supplement, whatever you want to call it. I guess it’s a medication. And she gave me another herbal supplement to take. And within a week, my menstrual cycle was back. Again, got this sort of tap on my shoulder from my guys. It said, pay attention. Pay attention to this. Ayurveda thing. And so I did I started to study it. I read a lot of books.
This is really pre Internet or the beginning of the Internet. So I read a lot of books. I went to the library. I went to bookstores. I started reading everything I could. Eventually I would get certified because it was just, it made so much sense to me. And it was changing so much in my life. And in my health and my well-being, and I knew that I had to become certified to use it to help people to educate. So this is what’s bringing me to this in the podcast today is I want to share with you an educate you on the Ayurvedic medicine so that you can start to see an approach in how you might take better care of your body and your mind that is in alignment with who you are. Because so many times I have heard people say over the years, well, I don’t like yoga. I don’t like this form of exercise or I don’t. And if you don’t like it, you’re not going to do it. There’s a reason why you don’t like it. It may not be the right thing for your body and mind type. It might actually be working against you. Instead of for you. And this is the difference, we have this model in western medicine, and even in the, in the integrative alternative arena where it’s one size fits all. It’s just such a broken model. It’s so broken. So I want to introduce you to this because it really can change the way you look at yourself, possibly look at your symptoms and what I love about it is every time I teach people where I’ve had clients that come to me and they start to learn these things, they’re like, oh, that’s why this happens or that’s why this didn’t work.
And it makes so much sense. Okay, that’s all I’m going to say about that part of it. The premise, the principles of Ayurvedic matters and it really is the Cadillac of energy medicine. It is the first medicine that there ever was in the world 5000 years ago. It originated in India. And it is based on the elements that we find in nature. Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine came from Ayurvedic medicine. They are variations of Ayurvedic medicine. There are three main mind body types in Ayurveda.
I’m going to tell you about them briefly here. I will leave some links in the show notes where you can explore a little bit deeper. Researcher reducing studying on your own and if you want help with any of it, please feel free to reach out to me. At Martha blessing dot com on the website. Since we are going into the summer season here in well where I live, we’re leaving spring and we’re entering summer. So I am going to start with things that can help to promote well-being and balance during the spring season.
Now, if you live somewhere else, if you live in Florida, if you live in California, if you live in an area that’s very warm, you’re mostly in summer season and this may not apply to you. And that is the whole point of it. Is that we do not need to do the same thing 24/7 360 five for our bodies to be in balance. And this is the biggest benefit of following our rate is doing and using a seasonal approach to everything that you do. Based on the elements in nature, which again is the seasons. And the elements in your body and in your mind, because there’s both. I’m going to start today telling you about cough dosa. That is the body mind type that has the most characteristics that are correlated to spring.
What do I mean by that? The elements that we are looking at with the cough a dose are earth and water. When you think of those qualities and those elements in nature, spring and western New York is we’ve had a tremendous amount of rain. That means that our ground is wet, our atmosphere are air is wet, right? The humidity, the moisture. If you are a cop a type, the principles in Ayurveda is like attracts like. So if you are a person who has a coffin nature, think of the earth and the ground when it’s wet and it’s spring. And it’s muddy. It’s thick and slow and muddy. That is the nature of the energetic principles of a Kapha person who’s primarily cough. Now we are born as one predominant dosha, but as we age, we go through different cycles. We go through different phases. And it depends, again, like I said, where you live.
I’ll give you an example. A cough a person does very well in a geographic environment and location like attracts like so the opposite of the earth and water, earth is heavy. It can be cool. It can be moist, the water, element, cool and moist. They struggle with seasonal allergies asthma, anything related to the lungs where we carry fluid, could be related to fluid water in the heart, excess, like congestive heart failure, could be depression because of the heaviness, the earth element, coffee types tend to have that couch potato can have a lot of inertia in their makeup because of the heaviness of the earth element. So what would be the opposite of that is you want to introduce things in your routine that counter those principles. So from an exercise perspective, yoga pretty much puts the coffin type to sleep. It’s too boring, it’s too slow. Unless it’s power yoga, which is stimulating. Coffin types for their exercise they need motion.
They need exercise that is stimulating when I lived in Austin, Texas. I used to see people out in the middle of the day in hill country. Cycling, and it’s a 100° out, and they’re cycling up and down the hills, and I kept thinking to myself, this is just torture. I could never do that in this heat. I would wilt. I want to be indoors in the air conditioning. But it made sense to me once I knew IRA to because it’s coffin types who do well with that and want that. The heat of the hot Texas summers will burn up all of that water and moisture element in their bodies. They need that stimulation. So that’s one example. Another example is the foods we eat. We’ve gotten so far away from thinking about and understanding and recognizing that food is energy. It’s supposed to be anyway. Obviously, McDonald’s French fries that you can leave in the city or car the back of the car for 6 months and it doesn’t decay.
That doesn’t have any energy and a Twinkies and Ho hos that sit on a shelf for years on end or whatever. However long, that’s not energy, but real food is energy and how and why is that true? You take a seed and you put it in the ground, it’s dormant and you give it water and you give it soil. We talk about nitrogen, the elements that plants need to grow, and we feed the plants. We give them the nutrients that they need, and they need sunlight, which is energetic, and they need water, which is H2O, right? It has a charge to it. So that plant will grow and in it inherently is energy in the food, and this is the approach that Ayurveda takes, so there really is no food that is off limits in Ayurveda.
You just have to wait for the right season for it to be a benefit to your body. In the spring, when we have the qualities of moisture and heaviness, this is the time now to be eating foods again that are going to get all of that moisture out of the body. This is where the mucus comes from when we think we have seasonal errors, it’s not. At the core level, the body is responding intelligently, intuitively, inherently, too, what’s going on inside and the mucous and the sneezing and the tearing in the watery eyes, it’s trying to flush out the system. We see it as a negative because the symptoms are uncomfortable, but it’s actually the body is actually doing its job. It’s trying to flush out the invaders, so to speak. And this is why cleansing the body in the spring is such a good idea.
When you do that, you won’t have those allergies anymore. Would have these problems. Seasonal allergies can also be a response I had a friend who lives in Arizona. He was really struggling to get rid of these. He said, I think it’s seasonal allergies, and I said, well, has it been drier? Where you are? He said, yes, it’s very dry here. He’s the type of person as a cough a type. His body is reacting and responding because it’s too dry. And it is creating mucus to flush out the system. The body has gotten too dry.
Now we think it’s allergies, right? But it’s not. It’s showing up as allergies, it’s showing up as things that are trying to flush out the toxins that are in the cells and in the tissues that have gotten buried and stored there. And it can’t do it because the body isn’t lubricated. It’s too dry. From the heat. So the solution is actually to invite moisture into the body. It’s important at that point in time to introduce foods that will lubricate and moisturize the tissues in the cells. And to also get the heat out of the body. So it’s not a good time to be eating animal proteins because they’re heating. I’m not on the fence. I’ve eaten and I don’t advocate for any specific diet. Other than to follow what seasonal. Some people want to go into, oh, I’m going to be vegetarian. That’s not a right for every single person or vegan or keto it’s why we have so much confusion. No one’s looking at the energetic properties of the foods that they’re eating. And that’s why we’re in such a mess when it comes to nutrition. Eat this don’t eat that, all that kind of stuff. What’s right for one person, there is no one perfect white diet that you should follow 24/7, 360 five, unless you are paying attention and actually doing the energetic principles of foods and eating. When you look at our ancestors, they did not become here in the states anyway. They did not become need eaters until they migrated to the north, right? Like our ancestors came from the tropics, and they lived off the land. They ate off the land. Then when they migrated to the north and to the cold environment, when they couldn’t grow food, they went out and they hunted and they killed, and they ate. And they made use of all of that. And they only did it in the wintertime. We only need these proteins in the winter. And then come somewhere and you look at nature, there’s just a plethora of abundant mother nature didn’t get it wrong, God didn’t get it wrong.
We are abundant. In fruits and vegetables in the summer months because they are here to provide all of that moisture to our bodies, right? Cucumbers, tomatoes, all of those things are very juicy. All the berries and fruits, they’re too hydrated our bodies. And to keep the heat out to cool the body, and moisturize the body. This friend of mine, what they need to do is start introducing foods that will actually get the heat out of the body. Lots of greens, things that are stringent. They help cleanse and cool and purify the blood. And that will counter all of the dryness that is in the environment and the allergies and the cough, and the other symptoms will go away. The sneezing watery eyes, all of those things. We’ve looked at the exercise, we’ve looked at some of the principles of the food. Now we want to look at the mind body aspect of caffa. Again, the mind, the mental portion is coffins can have a tendency, like I said, to lead towards depression because of the heaviness of the earth element. They feel sluggish, depending on where they live. So the best environment one of the worst environments for our coffee type person is to live where it’s cool and damp.
To live in western New York, long, cold, winters, very, very difficult for coffee type people. They need the stimulation. They need to keep moving. They do best in environments where they can get outside every day. In the sunshine and cycle walk and have exercises outdoors. So that they don’t get into a rut. Coffee types may have difficulty with meditation, a lot of folks will say, oh, I can’t sit still. I can’t quiet my mind for the coffin types again. Meditation and stillness practices, they can be very challenging because it’s too heavy for them. They might do better with a very short focused guided meditation or using something like walking as their meditation. Mindfulness, walking in nature and connecting with the earth element while they are still being in motion being active. If you have been struggling with particular ailments in symptoms, I hope this is helpful for you to start to think differently about your symptoms about your body and to start to take a different approach in work with your body and its inherent wisdom and intelligence instead of just trying to shut off and annihilate the symptom.
If you do struggle with seasonal allergies, just taking the pills is not going to correct the problem. Just taking allergy medication is not going to correct the problem. Your body is actually telling you something, and by just taking the medications, it’s not correcting the problem. You know me, I’m going to say, get to the core cause. What is the core cause? Oh, okay, there’s too much heat in my body. Or there’s too much moisture in my body. How do I correct that? With the things that I eat with the things that I do. And let my body come into its own natural balance. I’ve seen this many, many times, so many people what happens when they go to an allergist, or they go to a naturopath, they put them on a special diet, they start doing a no one’s addressing the energetic principles and properties of the food that they’re eating. So it’s no more gluten, no more of this, no more of that. Well, I will tell you that coffee types do not do well with a lot of grains.
There are a few grains that they can eat. It’s just natural. It’s not that there’s a real gluten intolerance. It’s that those particular foods and substances are like clue in the body for coffee and increases the earth and the water element. That’s where the problem is. So sometimes you can have those things if you’re doing the things that counter, the other things for making a stronger digestion. So some of the herbs, Ginger, fresh Ginger, Ginger tea, turmeric, turmeric milk in an almond or a dairy free type milk. These are things that are bitter and astringent and energetic properties that help the body.
What happens is people see or read or hear about these remedies and they do them 24/7. Again, 360 five, which is not appropriate. Too much turmeric because it is astringent will dry out the body too much. You shouldn’t have it every day. All day, all season long. All year long. Greens are good to have. In the spring and the summer for some types, coffee types, not in the winter. But some people will take some of these green supplements or green powders and they drink them every single day. I had a client who had rheumatoid arthritis. Saw and heard on Doctor Oz, green tea was a good antioxidant and a good anti inflammatory and so was turmeric. And so she was drinking, I think, something like 5 or 6 cups of green tea a day. And taking the turmeric supplements.
Well, both of those things are very, very drying in a stringent to the body. And she was actually not a cop a type. She was avatar type, which is already prone to dryness. So she was literally drying out her body with the remedy that she was taking with the things that she was doing. She was making the problem worse because she didn’t know her body type she didn’t know about Ayurveda she didn’t know about the energetic principles. And so the solution here is number one to learn. I’ll leave some links in the show notes where you can go and determine there is your dosha, which is your primary what you’re born with, your mind and your body type, and then there are also a an imbalance. So you could be a cough a type, but you could have a different kind of imbalance, and there’s a quiz I’ll leave a link to the quiz that you can take, but that imbalance is what you really want to be looking at. So there’s what you’re naturally born as and then there’s what you’re imbalances.
The treatment, the remedy is to find a solution that works for depends on how long you’ve had the issue and the problem, but find a solution that you want to try for maybe a month. A month and a half. And then you reevaluate, do I feel better? Do I feel worse? Because this kind of healing is what’s happening, it’s transformational. It is creating a transformation from the inside out. You are literally energetically feeding your body and your cells a frequency that it needs, and then as you heal, you have to reevaluate. Now what is the next frequency? What is the next thing? That I need to do. And so many times there is not this reevaluation. We’re not working with the body. We’re working against it. I mean, I see the same things. Even with functional medicine, they’re going on the premise that there’s something missing in the body.
There’s nothing missing. We’re doing something that’s creating the deficit. We’re either not eating well or not moving well or we’re using our mind in an ineffective way to have worry and to have stress, but there’s nothing missing. We’re not, we’re depleted because we’re doing things that are depleting ourselves, our bodies do know how to be healthy. So even in this functional medicine, I came across a woman who was, I mean, I could tell you exactly how to reverse anxiety. I’ve done it for many, many, many of my clients. And it’s quick and it’s easy. And you don’t have to take supplements. Like it works. But I saw this woman who was all about all of the supplements and there is a connection to the gut brain barrier.
But energetically, it’s an imbalance with too much energy stuck in one place. And the reason why she was trying to use supplements and nutrition is because the depletion of those elements in those sources in those nutrients, that’s not what causes anxiety. Those are the result of the anxiety. The anxiety has been in motion in the body and the mind and the brain and the energetic system for so long that it is actually depleting the nutrients in the body. This is where the adrenal fatigue comes from and all the other things. And ultimately, the immune system becomes compromised. But it starts as an energetic imbalance. So one of the reasons why I created my course unlocked the missing piece, I’ll leave a link to that as well in the show notes because you have the ability to switch and change that energy and get out of your head and into your body quickly and easily and you will find you are much healthier because of it.
It’s that simple and a lot of people don’t make the connection. This is the beginning of several podcasts that I will do about Ayurvedic medicine, the individual doses and body mind types to help you move through. It’s really a seasonal approach to nutrition to healing to managing your energy, managing your body, and you tuning into you. You getting the answers inside. Do I feel dry today? Do I feel this? Do I feel that? What am I feeling? What would be the thing that would correct encounter that today? If you really truly want to be well and be living empowered, it’s about stopping to giving your power away to doctors, to nature paths, to healers, to everyone, and actually take the reins of really diving in to the depths of who you are.
And what it is that you need rather than somebody dictating to you. I’m happy to guide you to find the answers to find what works for your body. I can not tell you how many clients come to me who have been doing the integrative nature path functional medicine doctors for anywhere from a couple of months to 5, 6 years with no resolution, no success. It’s better for a little while and then it’s not. Because they don’t use this approach. That’s why I think it’s a catalytic medicine. It’s incredibly easy. It’s incredibly wise. It’s incredibly empowering to you. Thanks for listening. Thanks for being here.
